Sticky Vinyl Saturday - The Ronettes

Phil Spector was always a kook, a great producer and we can thank him (I guess) for discovering Cher, but all kinds of crazy nonetheless, and now he's a convicted murderer and off to the clink for 19 years for shooting actress Lana Clarkson in the mouth back in 2003.

Oh, and he treated his first wife Ronnie like a red-headed stepchild. In addition to him not letting her use "his" toilet because he had hang-ups with having a multi-racial wife:

"...Phil kept Ronnie a near-prisoner and limited her opportunities to pursue her musical ambitions. In her autobiography, she said that he would force her to watch Citizen Kane to remind her she would be nothing without him. Spector's domineering attitude led to the dissolution of their marriage. (Ronnie) was forbidden to speak to the Rolling Stones or tour with the Beatles, for fear of infidelity. (She) claims Spector showed her a gold coffin with a glass top in his basement, promising to kill and display her should she leave him. During Spector's reclusive period in the late 1960s, he reportedly kept his wife locked inside their mansion. She claimed he also hid her shoes to dissuade her from walking outside, and kept the house dark because he didn't want anyone to see his balding head."

Ronnie left his looney-tunes ass and divorced him in 1972. Seems he carried a bit of a grudge...

"In 2007, Ronnie Spector discussed her Ronettes' much-delayed entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: "He wrote the Hall of Fame to tell them not to put me in. He did everything he could to stop me. He's bitter that I left him. He wants everyone to think he's the mastermind. He thought everything was because of him."

(I'm admitting I got the above from Wikipedia - it's a lazy Saturday. Here's a link to more on Spector back when he mattered.)

Without further ado, The Ronettes:

Amuse-Bouche

  • This bitch tries too hard. Talk about pretension overload. Do Lady GaGa fans even have the attention span to sit through a 7-plus minute music video? This is in-the-club-flying-on-E music. Do people still do Ecstasy? They know it's mostly speed now right? People, stick to alcohol: go out, drink, dance, cry in the bathoom, fight in the parking lot and then fall down on the way home. Just like they did in the olden days.
  • Jennifer Lopez gets a visit from Art Garfunkle on the set of what will no doubt be a craptastic flick. I liked 'Out of Sight' and 'The Cell,' but really, anybody could've played Lopez's part in either. Did I mention too her looks are gone? Wonder where they went because obviously she didn't pass them along to her kids.
  • In a case of "too much too soon," Susan Boyle is losing her grip and may be pulled from the finale of 'Britain's Got Talent' due to fears over her psychological well-being. You know, there was a time when it was called "the spotlight." Now, it's more like search lights singling out a motherfucker when they go over the wall. I don't envy anybody who tries any kind of achievement in the entertainment world now; having oneself in the crosshairs of the paparazzi isn't worth it.

Friday Shoe Porn

This is is a birthday edition today! And so my recommended way for birthday girl Diva to spend it is, of course, to buy herself a new pair of shoes.

These are Sergio Rossi (whoever that is) but purple and black will be my wedding colours. Can a person have a colour theme at their funeral? I'd do it then too...or just because it's Tuesday.

Go-with-anything-Leopard. Prince doesn't know these are missing...

Betcha if she dropped a penny from up there it would go right through a person's skull...

Feet beads. These are "sand sandals."

I'd love a pair of these but then I'd have to put a mirrorball in my livingroom and rent a front-end loader for my cocaine.

These are fun. My legs are too skinny for this type of shoe, I'd look like Olive Oil...I imagine these on Beth Ditto. A whole lotta cartoon woman needs a whole lotta cartoon shoe. Maybe Kelly Osbourne but she's too short, she already looks like she's got Fisher-Price stamped on her somewhere.

The "E-Meter" is a "Religious Artifact?" So Is My Corkscrew...The Church of $cientology on Trial in France

Now this is a very worthwhile prosecution:

(Link excerpt) "The Church of Scientology in France went on trial today on charges of organized fraud. Registered as a religion in the United States, with celebrity members such as actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, Scientology enjoys no such legal protection in France and has faced repeated accusations of being a money-making cult."

Take these rapscallions, fraudsters and racketeers to task. Xenu-launch them out a volcano; barley water enemas all around for the lot of them. Hiss.

Now We Know Who to Blame for Nazis, Deep-Fried Mars Bars, Monarchy and Putrid Cheese...

"The face of the first European, reconstructed by forensic artist Richard Neave." - from Telegraph UK.

Using cranial fragments and a jawbone, scientists have reconstructed the face of an individual who lived in modern-day Romania between 34,000 and 36,000 years ago. They don't know if the specimen, a contemporary of Neandertal, is male or female. I find that odd. Even without a pelvis, it's possible for paleoanthropologists to 'sex' archaic homo and hominin remains since there is such a physical difference (sexual dysmorphism) between male and female primates: comparative analysis based on existing and fossil species, no?

Regardless, what is striking to me is the uncanny resemblance of this European forebear to oh, Hip-Hoprepreneur Russell Simmons, or Cicely Tyson, or say, this chap:

This is definitely proof of a God, and a Just one, because at the end of the day the religious Right like the Dominionists, Creationists and assorted "Aryan" racialist what-have-yous, are Black. The "One-Drop" rule has never looked so good. Bravo Mr. God, bravo! You know he and Darwin high-fived over this one. Too bad the Nazis didn't breakdance their way through Europe, things would've turned out a lot different - for one, they would've all been incapacitated with road rash. If the Nuremberg Rally and parade had flavour like a New Orleans funeral, maybe the Führer wouldn't have taken that "tone."

At the end of the day, evolution theory triumphs and it's too bad more people don't pay attention to what science has been saying for decades: we are all out of Africa, no matter what colour we are or other physical differences we possess due to millenia of environmental adaptation.

Sticky Vinyl Saturday: The B-52s & Bonuses/Bonii/Boners...You Get It.

I know, it's been two weeks without 'Friday Shoe Porn' and Diva is going to kick my ass. As hard to believe as it is, lately my mind has been thinking on other stuff besides the fabulous things we dames can put on our dogs - it happens (I've fixed sloppy errors in this post 4 times alone now). I'll try to be a little more productive (and accurate) this week.

Anyway, on to the matter at hand:

Is your party flagging? Then you need to play something by this band. Athens Georgia in the house...Here's 'Dance This Mess Around' from the B-52s live in 1983.

I'm throwing in the video for 'Candy' by Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson of the B-52's, just because I'm generous like that. Unfortunately the embed is disabled in YouTube for this one. Fascists.

Oh what the hell, here's Iggy and 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' too. There's a 1979 clip out there of Iggy and the Stooges at the BBC's 'Whistle Test' but it's only about a minute long. I don't like posting teasers but here's the link if you want to check it out, just to see what a total snack James Osterberg was. Now Iggy wears Crocs and I totally grieve. Punk isn't just dead, it appears to have been buried at your local healthfood store. Anarchy in the essential oils aisle...

The Cat's Got Her Tongue About Loud Sex

Written from the perspective of a woman who isn't getting any (at least she admits it) Rosie DiManno's latest column in the Toronto Star is an abuse of her position and platform as a national columnist insofar as the intention; a celebate's lament and crabby rant about her female neighbour who is having regular, and apparently very loud, sexytimes.

The article was childish enough but what was even better were the reader comments: Talk about an issue that has people holding their heads and walking around in circles muttering "what to do? what to do?"  More than a few comments suggested doing something to embarrass the woman. How appalling.  Rosie herself is "just hoping" her offending neighbour reads the column. What an uptight chickenshit. What is worse is that it's people like this that call anonymous hotlines to rat on people, like the 1984-esque neo-fascism that is the Antisocial Behaviour law and accompanying complaint/tip line that's been installed in the UK.

What I gleaned from these comments is that the crux of a lot of people's problem with the noise is because it's sex-related. What would you do if it was a loud stereo? There's no difference. If it's a 'one-off' (no pun intended) or occasional thing, ignore it. If an individual is habitually disturbing the peace or reasonable enjoyment of others with their loud sex, then the thing to do is knock on the wall or; slip a note under the door or; go to the unit and personally let them know you're being disturbed and if that fails: complain to the landlord/condo board or notify the police, the latter being required to enforce the noise bylaw.

People are just at a loss how to react because it's sex. Sex is normal, so we should be prepared to discuss it normally when others get carried away. It happens. In urban life we should expect to be exposed to others' lives to a degree and deal with it like responsible adults. When I hear my neighbours going at it, my partner and I giggle. I'm sure they do the same with us.

Something else the readership, or the columnist in fact, hadn't considered is that maybe this woman is filming. 'Amateur' porn is extremely popular these days and anybody who's had at least a passing accquaintance with video porn knows how um, pronounced, the audio is. Perhaps it was just "another day at the office" for the fornicating neighbour but whatever the circumstances behind the sex, I suggest Ms. DiManno put on her big girl panties, hum "Birds do it, Bees do it," and deal with the situation like an adult. Or just pretend she's complaining about a loud stereo.

Want to know what I think? I think she's secretly titillated and that's why she hasn't said anything and then threw it out there for others' amusement. It's a hateful thing to do and I bet. you. any. money. that if the two participants were males, Rosie DiManno would've kept her mouth shut. It's okay for women to hate on each other, it always has been and this is blatantly evident here: the woman next door is getting her brains fucked out on the regular and Ms. DiManno can't stand it. More to the point: she probably doesn't even know what that means. Poor thing.

"Here comes the sun, little darlin'..." and Some 'Earth' Love

This photo gave Yours Truly goosebumps...talk about feeling like an ant on the sidewalk of the Universe.  "In this tightly cropped image, the NASA space shuttle Atlantis is seen in silhouette during solar transit, Tuesday, May 12, 2009, from Florida. This image was made before Atlantis and the crew of STS-125 had grappled the Hubble Space Telescope. Photo Credit: NASA/Thierry Legault" (Source: Livescience)

For an exceptional documentary about our planet, definitely do not miss the BBC film 'Earth.' The footage is absolutely outstanding. 'Earth' simultaneously humbles and enthralls; it provokes a fierce sense of protectiveness over our planet while at the same time imbuing us with a sense of shame. Nature is beautiful and unforgiving; her creatures, us included, are all interwoven.
The lives of species that play out in the pursuit of basic survival on an indifferent planet populated with other earthlings who have forgotten their place in the ecosystem is nothing short of heartbreaking, yet triumphant, and you will cheer at the end for the sheer tenacity of life.  Seeing this film, you will be reminded that our Earth is a little blue miracle floating out there alone in that great blackness. And you will believe there is a God, or something Higher and Good, that smiled on this particular planet in this particular galaxy.

There are other worlds and other beings out there to be sure, but likely none such as this one and those we share it with: the "lucky" planet we call our Home.

Sticky Vinyl Saturday - The Violent Femmes

Here are The Violent Femmes, a staple of the musically scattered decade that was the 80s. It was a toss up between this song and 'Blister in the Sun' but in the end I decided to post 'Add It Up' because:

1) Everybody knows 'Blister'...it's SO overplayed and;

2) I am an evil human being sometimes and I'm dedicating this video to a certain young, Oedipal, pathetic over-sharer named Shia LaBoeuf. Dude, shut up or you'll never get laid again. You're talking your way into a poontang wasteland. Or a dick drought, depending on your preference: you look totally 'confused' to me but either way, you're making me wince in embarrassment for you and I hate that.

It's interesting to note that 'boeuf' is French for 'beef.' It would have behooved Shia SansBoeuf to have taken that into consideration before alerting the media of his supposedly underwhelming endowment.

Amuse-Bouche (Except for the Spencer Pratt Item Which is Puke-Inducing)

...to THIS level of glory overnight:

I'm pretty sure that Suge Knight has to at least dangle him upside down by the heels out a window first. Gotta pay your dues, Pratt. You got some big-ass Wigga clown shoes to fill.

*UPDATE* FAMOUSweekly just replied to Pratt via Twitter, "You ****** Janice Dickinson?!!" See what I mean about big shoes? At least Vanilla Ice can say he jobbed Madonna in her heyday/prime, whatever. You're not bringin' it, Pratt. You're gonna have to step up your game. Get back to us when you bang somebody who is at least considered bangable. You might as well have announced to the universe that you stepped in dogshit.

Moving on...

Tamils: Toronto Has Had ENOUGH.

Toronto has the largest Tamil population (300,000) outside of Sri Lanka and last night they all appeared to be blocking the east and westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway, waving their silly Tamil Tiger flags around (photo slideshow here). Okay, not all of them were there but up to 7,000 were and that's a hell of a lot of people disturbing the peace because they expect action by the Canadian government to end Sri Lanka's civil war.

Plainly put: Why would Canada intervene in the Sri Lankan government's mission to eradicate a known terrorist group and its sympathizers within the borders of its own sovereign nation? Was Canada's 3 million dollars in humanitarian aid unsatisfactory?  Our 20 soldiers are already busy in Afghanistan.  Somebody needs to explain this to the individuals who have been disrupting the civic rights of other citizens in this city for weeks while our mayor, premier and the police sit playing pocket-pool: "...occupying the Gardiner Expressway isn't acceptable – its unsafe. We need the protestors to recognize that," said (Mayor) Miller." It's "unsafe?" That's it? Another 'u' word leaps to mind for me and that is 'unbelievable.' 'Unlawful' also applies.

The Tamil demonstrators here wouldn't get away with this behaviour in their beloved Sri Lanka. What they would get there is shot.

The Canadian public is not the enemy here. If the Tamils want to protest, let them do it peacefully and legally (that means renewing their demonstration permit, which has expired, and getting off the highway) or; they can write a Member of Parliament or; they can go to Sri Lanka and pick up a gun. What they should not be permitted to do is hold fellow citizens hostage and use children and seniors from the Tamil community as shields to deter any potential crowd dispersal actions by law enforcement.

Toronto's Tamil community has lost the support of a lot of reasonable-minded people who were initially sympathetic to their plight because of flagrant disrespect for the rule of law, peaceful assembly and demonstration. What the Tamils are asking of Canada to make happen in Sri Lanka is the very thing they're pissing on here.
They should be ashamed of themselves.

Amuse Bouche

  • Jennifer Lopez takes a mo' to consider all the unfortunate minions out there after realizing not everybody is richer than God and may have a financial cramp or two trying to pay medical bills when their kids get sick. There's just no stopping that kind of stupid...

  • Buy some goddamned underwear that doesn't fall off your flat ass and hang between your legs like you just dumped in them, you slag.

Just once, ONCE would I like to see her band and back-up singers tag-team bitchslap this spoiled, self-absorbed piece of dreck that is now Amy Winehouse.  Amy Jade, just go sit your 'woe-is-me' ass in a tree, smoke your banana peels and scratch yourself...you're barely human anymore anyway.

  • Of course Boy George O'Dowd looks good after 4 months in prison, all those hot showers, pillowfights and vitamin A facials...they might as well have sent him to Hedonism II for chrissakes.

Sticky Vinyl Saturday - The Buzzcocks

'Sick City Sometimes' was a three-song EP released by the Buzzcocks in 2004 with a limited edition version on red translucent vinyl. The standout is the title track which appeared in Alan G. Parker's (not to be confused with Sir Alan Parker, director of 'The Wall') flabby, anemic and underwhelming documentary 'Who Killed Nancy.' It did look nice in places though.

Friday Shoe Porn

WTF? These are Proenza Schouler, seen here on Helena Bonham Carter. Okay, that's not true...

but it could be...

I don't know if these are YSL but the design house was responsible for coming up with this style. To me they look like "what if a gladiator sandal was given the contemporary look of a highrise under construction?" If you look closely at the heel, you can see little ironworkers having their lunch.

From Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B collection and I want a pair. I love the 80s Ska 2Tone-esque feel and the mirror heel is not just visually appealing, it's practical if you're ever caught without your compact. Who needs a 'Mirror in the Bathroom?'

The retro chain-link design in glossy black patent just makes this shoe from Hermes. They're gorgeous.

'What Obama Must Tell Bibi' - J. Steele The Guardian (UK)

What Obama must tell Bibi

Only a dramatic break from previous US policy on Israel can end the Middle East deadlock

The toughest meeting of Barack Obama's young presidency is approaching. In the next few weeks, he will have to sit down with Israel'sBinyamin Netanyahu. The difficulty is not just that the prime minister refuses to accept the right of a Palestinian state to exist and thereby shows the Palestinians have no partner for peace.

Far more burdensome are the ghosts of US policies past. If Obama is sincere in wanting to break the stalemate of the Middle East's core conflict, he will have to launch the US relationship with Israel on to radically new lines. Israel must be treated as a normal country. It cannot enjoy permanent licence to escape criticism for practising policies that would be condemned if carried out by any other country's government. Even if Israelis, through their complex coalition arrangements, had anointed a more progressive and enlightened leader, this would be necessary. It is doubly essential now that Israel has chosen a man of aggressive and narrow vision.

The day of the blank cheque must be over. The day of the huge cheque must be over, too. Why should a country with one of the world's highest per capita incomes receive around $3bn annually, or roughly a third of the US foreign aid budget (not including extra support from the Pentagon)? Why should it not have to account for its purchases like every other recipient country – a conscious lack of oversight that allows Washington to turn a blind eye to the fact that US tax dollars are financing illegal settlements in Jerusalem and the West Bank and helping to build the so-called apartheid wall?

Unless Obama ends America's special relationship with Israel, this omission will be the achilles heel of his foreign policy. America's standing in the Middle East, its influence in the Gulf, its image in the Muslim world, its relationship with Iran, and even its support in Europe are all linked to the way it treats Israel.

Obama's fulsome comments about Israel before his election already suggested that this was likely to be his most dangerous weakness. His first 100 days in power have done nothing to negate that. His speeches in Turkey, which were directed at Muslim audiences, showed no recognition of the fact that most Turks, Arabs and Iranians see US policy towards Israel as unfair and partisan.

His resounding appeal in Prague for a nuclear-free world contained no reference to Israel's nuclear arsenal or the need for all nuclear countries (including India and Pakistan) to join the non- proliferation treaty. If Iran, a signatory of the NPT, is rightly pressed to adhere to the requirement for transparency, it is hypocrisy not to press the non-signatories to be as honest. To argue that countries which have not signed up are exempt from the rules may be legally right, but is politically absurd. Obama's admirable wish to reduce the world's nuclear stockpile cannot stop at the gates of Dimona and the sites where Israel's nuclear warheads are kept.

Israel's decades of indulgence from US presidents and a largely supine Congress have produced a culture where it virtually dictates what US policy should be. Israel helped to empower Hamas as a way of undermining its then bugbear, Yasser Arafat. Now that Hamas is independent, strong and popular, Israel sees it as the new target. The Obama administration should not go along with that. As David Gardner argues in his excellent book, Last Chance, "boycotting Hamas has been self-defeating. There is no legal or moral reason why Hamas – or anyone else – should recognise a state that refuses to define its boundaries, which are being expanded daily on Palestinian land."

Seeking to destroy Hamas after it won the Palestinian elections was, apart from the invasion of Iraq, Bush's biggest foreign policy blunder, and one that the European Union foolishly supported. Some European governments would like to change. They have held indirect talks with Hamas and may move to direct ones. Obama should do the same.

If Washington can talk to North Korea and Iran, it has no reason to boycott the people who won the last Palestinian elections and are likely to win the next one. Far from defeating Hamas, Israel's war on Gaza has made it stronger while further rein forcing Israel's image as a bully. By the same token, the US needs to talk to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel's war on Hezbollah in 2006 was as brutal as its war on Gaza this year, nothing more than the old strategy, taken to a grotesque level, of demolishing homes as a collective punishment.

Now Netanyahu is seeking to link Iran even more closely to Israeli policy than the former prime minister Ehud Olmert did. Without moves to stop Iran's suspected pursuit of a nuclear bomb and its support for Hamas and Hezbollah, there can be no chance of Israel agreeing to peace talks, his officials are saying.

The most important thing that Obama should tell Netanyahu is that Washington rejects such linkage. The main source of tension in the Middle East and the Gulf is not Iran, but Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands. An old issue cannot be hidden by a new one. Until Israel pulls back to the 1967 borders, give or take some land swaps, under international agreement, Palestinian resistance will continue – and other states will be entitled to support it.

As for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, Obama must reject it openly. When Olmert raised the issue last year, as the Guardian reported in September, even Bush told him it was unacceptable because an attack would be seen as having US support, since Israel's bombers would have to fly across US-controlled airspace in Iraq.

Bush saw that his last hopes of retaining credibility in the Muslim world would collapse, but his message to the then Israeli prime minister was made privately. Obama should not only tell Netanyahu the same thing. He should give his message loud and clear. He should also declare that any US attack on Iran is off the table. What Washington rightly warns Israel not to do, it cannot reserve the right to do itself.

Obama's third point should be that he does not stand behind the letter that Bush wrote to Ariel Sharon in 2004, accepting Israel's settlements in the West Bank as "new realities" that need not be abandoned. The document was not a treaty or even a bilateral government agreement. It should be overridden by a new letter stating that the US considers every post-1967 settlement illegal. Only by making a dramatic break from previous American policy can Obama prepare the ground for a lasting agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. Mediation cannot succeed when the mediator treats one side as special.
