Amuse-Bouche (Except for the Spencer Pratt Item Which is Puke-Inducing)

...to THIS level of glory overnight:

I'm pretty sure that Suge Knight has to at least dangle him upside down by the heels out a window first. Gotta pay your dues, Pratt. You got some big-ass Wigga clown shoes to fill.

*UPDATE* FAMOUSweekly just replied to Pratt via Twitter, "You ****** Janice Dickinson?!!" See what I mean about big shoes? At least Vanilla Ice can say he jobbed Madonna in her heyday/prime, whatever. You're not bringin' it, Pratt. You're gonna have to step up your game. Get back to us when you bang somebody who is at least considered bangable. You might as well have announced to the universe that you stepped in dogshit.

Moving on...

Tamils: Toronto Has Had ENOUGH.

Toronto has the largest Tamil population (300,000) outside of Sri Lanka and last night they all appeared to be blocking the east and westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway, waving their silly Tamil Tiger flags around (photo slideshow here). Okay, not all of them were there but up to 7,000 were and that's a hell of a lot of people disturbing the peace because they expect action by the Canadian government to end Sri Lanka's civil war.

Plainly put: Why would Canada intervene in the Sri Lankan government's mission to eradicate a known terrorist group and its sympathizers within the borders of its own sovereign nation? Was Canada's 3 million dollars in humanitarian aid unsatisfactory?  Our 20 soldiers are already busy in Afghanistan.  Somebody needs to explain this to the individuals who have been disrupting the civic rights of other citizens in this city for weeks while our mayor, premier and the police sit playing pocket-pool: "...occupying the Gardiner Expressway isn't acceptable – its unsafe. We need the protestors to recognize that," said (Mayor) Miller." It's "unsafe?" That's it? Another 'u' word leaps to mind for me and that is 'unbelievable.' 'Unlawful' also applies.

The Tamil demonstrators here wouldn't get away with this behaviour in their beloved Sri Lanka. What they would get there is shot.

The Canadian public is not the enemy here. If the Tamils want to protest, let them do it peacefully and legally (that means renewing their demonstration permit, which has expired, and getting off the highway) or; they can write a Member of Parliament or; they can go to Sri Lanka and pick up a gun. What they should not be permitted to do is hold fellow citizens hostage and use children and seniors from the Tamil community as shields to deter any potential crowd dispersal actions by law enforcement.

Toronto's Tamil community has lost the support of a lot of reasonable-minded people who were initially sympathetic to their plight because of flagrant disrespect for the rule of law, peaceful assembly and demonstration. What the Tamils are asking of Canada to make happen in Sri Lanka is the very thing they're pissing on here.
They should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Jennifer Lopez takes a mo' to consider all the unfortunate minions out there after realizing not everybody is richer than God and may have a financial cramp or two trying to pay medical bills when their kids get sick. There's just no stopping that kind of stupid...

Sticky Vinyl Saturday - The Buzzcocks

'Sick City Sometimes' was a three-song EP released by the Buzzcocks in 2004 with a limited edition version on red translucent vinyl. The standout is the title track which appeared in Alan G. Parker's (not to be confused with Sir Alan Parker, director of 'The Wall') flabby, anemic and underwhelming documentary 'Who Killed Nancy.' It did look nice in places though.

Friday Shoe Porn

WTF? These are Proenza Schouler, seen here on Helena Bonham Carter. Okay, that's not true...

but it could be...

I don't know if these are YSL but the design house was responsible for coming up with this style. To me they look like "what if a gladiator sandal was given the contemporary look of a highrise under construction?" If you look closely at the heel, you can see little ironworkers having their lunch.

From Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B collection and I want a pair. I love the 80s Ska 2Tone-esque feel and the mirror heel is not just visually appealing, it's practical if you're ever caught without your compact. Who needs a 'Mirror in the Bathroom?'

The retro chain-link design in glossy black patent just makes this shoe from Hermes. They're gorgeous.

'What Obama Must Tell Bibi' - J. Steele The Guardian (UK)

What Obama must tell Bibi

Only a dramatic break from previous US policy on Israel can end the Middle East deadlock

The toughest meeting of Barack Obama's young presidency is approaching. In the next few weeks, he will have to sit down with Israel'sBinyamin Netanyahu. The difficulty is not just that the prime minister refuses to accept the right of a Palestinian state to exist and thereby shows the Palestinians have no partner for peace.

Far more burdensome are the ghosts of US policies past. If Obama is sincere in wanting to break the stalemate of the Middle East's core conflict, he will have to launch the US relationship with Israel on to radically new lines. Israel must be treated as a normal country. It cannot enjoy permanent licence to escape criticism for practising policies that would be condemned if carried out by any other country's government. Even if Israelis, through their complex coalition arrangements, had anointed a more progressive and enlightened leader, this would be necessary. It is doubly essential now that Israel has chosen a man of aggressive and narrow vision.

The day of the blank cheque must be over. The day of the huge cheque must be over, too. Why should a country with one of the world's highest per capita incomes receive around $3bn annually, or roughly a third of the US foreign aid budget (not including extra support from the Pentagon)? Why should it not have to account for its purchases like every other recipient country – a conscious lack of oversight that allows Washington to turn a blind eye to the fact that US tax dollars are financing illegal settlements in Jerusalem and the West Bank and helping to build the so-called apartheid wall?

Unless Obama ends America's special relationship with Israel, this omission will be the achilles heel of his foreign policy. America's standing in the Middle East, its influence in the Gulf, its image in the Muslim world, its relationship with Iran, and even its support in Europe are all linked to the way it treats Israel.

Obama's fulsome comments about Israel before his election already suggested that this was likely to be his most dangerous weakness. His first 100 days in power have done nothing to negate that. His speeches in Turkey, which were directed at Muslim audiences, showed no recognition of the fact that most Turks, Arabs and Iranians see US policy towards Israel as unfair and partisan.

His resounding appeal in Prague for a nuclear-free world contained no reference to Israel's nuclear arsenal or the need for all nuclear countries (including India and Pakistan) to join the non- proliferation treaty. If Iran, a signatory of the NPT, is rightly pressed to adhere to the requirement for transparency, it is hypocrisy not to press the non-signatories to be as honest. To argue that countries which have not signed up are exempt from the rules may be legally right, but is politically absurd. Obama's admirable wish to reduce the world's nuclear stockpile cannot stop at the gates of Dimona and the sites where Israel's nuclear warheads are kept.

Israel's decades of indulgence from US presidents and a largely supine Congress have produced a culture where it virtually dictates what US policy should be. Israel helped to empower Hamas as a way of undermining its then bugbear, Yasser Arafat. Now that Hamas is independent, strong and popular, Israel sees it as the new target. The Obama administration should not go along with that. As David Gardner argues in his excellent book, Last Chance, "boycotting Hamas has been self-defeating. There is no legal or moral reason why Hamas – or anyone else – should recognise a state that refuses to define its boundaries, which are being expanded daily on Palestinian land."

Seeking to destroy Hamas after it won the Palestinian elections was, apart from the invasion of Iraq, Bush's biggest foreign policy blunder, and one that the European Union foolishly supported. Some European governments would like to change. They have held indirect talks with Hamas and may move to direct ones. Obama should do the same.

If Washington can talk to North Korea and Iran, it has no reason to boycott the people who won the last Palestinian elections and are likely to win the next one. Far from defeating Hamas, Israel's war on Gaza has made it stronger while further rein forcing Israel's image as a bully. By the same token, the US needs to talk to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel's war on Hezbollah in 2006 was as brutal as its war on Gaza this year, nothing more than the old strategy, taken to a grotesque level, of demolishing homes as a collective punishment.

Now Netanyahu is seeking to link Iran even more closely to Israeli policy than the former prime minister Ehud Olmert did. Without moves to stop Iran's suspected pursuit of a nuclear bomb and its support for Hamas and Hezbollah, there can be no chance of Israel agreeing to peace talks, his officials are saying.

The most important thing that Obama should tell Netanyahu is that Washington rejects such linkage. The main source of tension in the Middle East and the Gulf is not Iran, but Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands. An old issue cannot be hidden by a new one. Until Israel pulls back to the 1967 borders, give or take some land swaps, under international agreement, Palestinian resistance will continue – and other states will be entitled to support it.

As for an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, Obama must reject it openly. When Olmert raised the issue last year, as the Guardian reported in September, even Bush told him it was unacceptable because an attack would be seen as having US support, since Israel's bombers would have to fly across US-controlled airspace in Iraq.

Bush saw that his last hopes of retaining credibility in the Muslim world would collapse, but his message to the then Israeli prime minister was made privately. Obama should not only tell Netanyahu the same thing. He should give his message loud and clear. He should also declare that any US attack on Iran is off the table. What Washington rightly warns Israel not to do, it cannot reserve the right to do itself.

Obama's third point should be that he does not stand behind the letter that Bush wrote to Ariel Sharon in 2004, accepting Israel's settlements in the West Bank as "new realities" that need not be abandoned. The document was not a treaty or even a bilateral government agreement. It should be overridden by a new letter stating that the US considers every post-1967 settlement illegal. Only by making a dramatic break from previous American policy can Obama prepare the ground for a lasting agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. Mediation cannot succeed when the mediator treats one side as special.

More "First" and Less "Fabulous" Please...

Here is US First Lady Michelle Obama looking the best I've ever seen her. Love, love, LOVE her hair. Is it a cap-cut or just pinned up? While a bit of retro flair does suit her, I hope she moves away from the Jackie-O clone look she had been sporting. It makes me uncomfortable. I am interested in President Obama and his wife to the extent of how they make use of his tenure in Office; not being complicit in resucitating 'Camelot' as some in the media have been trying to do.

Another lovely picture of the First Lady, this time with Oprah having dinner in NYC. Harpo's done nothing but try to insinuate herself into the Obamas lives since Barack became leader of the Democratic Party. She's shameless, utterly shameless. That being said, the Obamas sure do seem to like rubbing elbows with the celebrity elite. It's a fine line from Commander-in-Chief to Media Whore so I hope the Obamas are mindful of this.

While I believe that Presidents' wives have a definite role to fulfill so they doesn't sit around useless and end up drunks like Pat Nixon or Betty Ford; that role should be to essentially make her husband look good in public and complement what he's doing in terms of policy. I don't think "too much" First Lady is a Good Thing. As a taxpayer, I wouldn't want to see the spouse of my leader of government being more of a socialite that working on projects of social and community conscience: planting some veggies and wearing $540 designer French running shoes to volunteer at a food bank don't cut it.

I appreciate that many political wives are multidimensional professional women in their own right, however surely they understand that to be a political wife (or husband) is to take the back seat in certain respects. Call me old-fashioned but the whole family takes a gigantic 'time out' from their regular lives when a head of that family becomes 'Leader of the Free World.'  That's just the way it is, I don't think it an unreasonable expectation and Michelle Obama is treading a fine line.

Maybe it's just me, but with the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression going on, I don't think the First Lady should be out noshing it up at some 5 star restaurant in New York with celebrities. Or wearing $540 shoes to volunteer at a food bank. Dear, it makes you look Out. Of. Touch. and that's not good. Your husband is a civil servant, not anything remotely annointed so let's keep our perspective clear and not buy into our own hype shall we?

Amuse-Bouche avec Allsorts

It's been a busy few days of real life TCB that've interfered with the Pop!Clash universe and so the blog has slipped a little bit.  Today was the icing on the cake: I spent the entire afternoon sitting in family court because my boyfriend's babymother is an unfit parent. Long story short, court was delayed because the file didn't get up to the judge on time and so we had to sit in the same corridor with Jabba the C*nt and her remedial boyfriend for 2 hours...I didn't know that a tank top, a sweater tied around the waist and spandex pants were court clothes. Silly me in my black pencil skirt and cropped avocado green suit jacket.

Good Grief. Anyway, here are some trivial morsels of diversion:
  • Nickelback is the worst thing to come out of Canada since Men Without Hats and Mad Cow-tainted beef. I apologize to people everywhere on behalf of this triumvirate of pestilence and evil. Anyhoo, it seems that Nickelcrap's frontman Chad Kroeger is having some legal trouble again  and currently being sued for punching some guy in the face two years ago. The complaintant is apparently hurt by Chad's lack of remorse over the incident. If Kroeger had any kind of human feelings at all, he would feel remorse for inflicting the Creedcophany that is Nickelback on the world. A silly little smack in the grill is minor in comparison.

  • "The Linebaaacker in Reyeedd..." Here's Jessica Biel breaking a fundamental rule of photography and eyes by wearing red on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Gala. She strikes me as a rube and now I just feel sad. Oh well, moving on...

  • ...we have Madge at the same Gala. Here is a woman who despite all her money and fame, wouldn't know style, culture and grace if it bit her on the ass and will thus forever remain a rube. She's had enough time and money to figure it out so she has no excuse like poor old Jessica Biel. Is Madonna reading Goop?  methinks not (or maybe she is...).

  • Liberal Party Member of Parliament Ruby Dhalla is following the quaint, old-timey Indian tradition of abusing household staff and treating them like slaves. Among the accusations are: Dhalla's family not paying overtime for 16 hour days; farming them out to work at other locations like the family-owned chiropractic clinics and homes of extended family and; seizing and holding their passports and other vital documentation. By the way, Ruby Dhalla is an elitist fashion plate and I've no idea what the hell she's doing in my government, but it seems having good hair can get you places in the Canadian government:

Below is Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment from April 2006 - January 2007. She talked some smack about the Kyoto Accord not being do-able and was shuffled to a minor portfolio out West (where Nickelback is from...). She was also made President of the Privy Council, but since we got our own Constitution in 1982, and made the Queen come all the way over here to sign it, we don't need to kow-tow to the Privy Council to get anything governmental done anymore (emphasis on the 'mental').

Next is a real treat: Voila, Julie Couillard. Mlle. Couillard was an ex-ol' lady of a Quebec Hell's Angel who took up with some cabinet minister named Maxime Bernier. Messr. Bernier was so caught up in the lovin' that he'd leave sensitive government documents lying around on Mlle. Couillard's coffee table. Apparently the head was so good he forgot about her biker affiliations and what "breach of national security" means. They're not together anymore. Duh.

More Important Governmental Hair. There's no middle of the road with Canadian politicians and their hair...Stephen Harper isn't here because it's obvious he wears a piece. I'm only interested in authenticity. Baho keepin' it real up in this ma:

Sticky Vinyl Saturday

Here is the incomparable Patti Smith performing a live, acoustic version of 'Because the Night,' (co-written with Bruce Springsteen) from her 1978 album 'Easter.' Along with the anthemic 'People Have the Power,' 'Because the Night' is one of her better known songs. Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Known as the Godmother of Punk, her style of rock poetry crosses all genres. She was married to Fred 'Sonic' Smith of the MC5 until his death in 1994.

Friday Shoe Porn

The torture that is ballet: Would I want to dance around on my other knuckles in shoes with blocks of wood in the toes  only to stand in buckets full of ice when I was finished? I guess that's why I'm not a ballerina....I don't suffer for my art; I just suffer.

I rember when Oxblood Doc Martens were really hard to come by: you couldn't buy Docs here, you had to have family or friends in the UK to ship them to you.  Now they're made in China..."Oi"will never be the same.

"Let's hear it for the boys," Boot worship always looks amazing in black & white. Besides, you can never go wrong with some man-flesh...

These would make the lineup at the grocery store a whole new adventure...I'd do it. Actually, I'd probably do better in Toe Shoes.

Amuse-Bouche

  • This is probably one of the very few times Howard Stern has said anything worth listening to: "My feeling about gay people is that we have a responsibility not only to make gay marriage acceptable and to make gays feel accepted as much as heterosexuals…Gay people are downtrodden. They are beaten. They are abused for their sexuality, and it goes across race. In the white community and the black community gay people are the bastards of the world. And in order for things to  change, because any one of you could have gay children, or gay relatives, or gay friends…we have a responsibility to make this acceptable, to get all this bullshit so that some gay kid going to high school doesn't get the shit beaten out of him just because he's gay…I'm as heterosexual as they come. What is this hang-up about gay marriage? Who cares? Get on with your life!" (Perez Hilton)

  • Chris Brown's attorney Mark Geragos will likely seek to have the assault charge against his client dismissed if it turns out that the police photo of Rihanna's injuries that made the rounds on the internet a while back was leaked by someone at the LAPD. (Let's just pause here for a moment shall we and consider some highlights from the keystone thugs of the Los Angeles Police Department: Rodney King, OJ Simpson, Joe Minority Citizen in East LA, Compton or Watts). If true, this is a gross violation of procedure and evidence handling but since Brown is being tried by a judge only, it can't be trotted out that the photo's release would prejudice a jury. Furthermore, the picture speaks for itself in terms of displaying the extent of her injuries. With this photographic evidence being released and the trial now in jeopardy, Rihanna should definitely be called to the stand if the proceedings do go ahead.

  • The Mail Online reports that Kelly McGillis who starred in 'Top Gun,' 'Witness' and 'The Accused' has said she's "done with the man thing" and her next partner will definitely be a woman. McGillis, who had long denied she was Gay despite rumours to the contrary, outed herself in an interview for SheWired.com

  • Isn't she slovenly? Here's LaLohan on vay-kay in Maui. From this picture I thought it was Winehouse territory. Everybody knows that when you make your own cutoffs, you don't cut them so short that the front pockts are hanging out. I don't care where you're wearing them. Girlfriend probably bought them that way; Lindsay Lohan spends a lot of money to look heinous. Extra fug points if she' wearing them with heels.

  • Britney should switch to OB tampons because there's no way you'd see that teeny green string on camera. (ICYDK)
  • "The Internet Celebrates the Legacy of Bea Arthur" I'm late with this I know, that's because I've been watching episodes of 'Maude' and 'Golden Girls' on YouTube just so nobody gets all judgemental on my ass thinking I don't care. I'll miss you Bea. Canadians will always remember your commercials for Shopper's Drug Mart too - a little piece of you onscreen that we didn't have to share with anybody:
